A new ship for 2011 : the PIANA

A new ro-ro vessel on the Marseille-Bastia line by 2011 !

Since a few months ago, the Brodosplit (Croatia) shipyards have been in charge of building a new ship ordered by La Méridionale.

180 metres in length, it will be able to carry 2500 linear metres of freight, 200 cars and 750 passengers at a service speed of 23 knots.

It will be the flagship of our fleet and as such will be equiped with the latest techniques in sustainable development (highly sophisticated waste management, sorted for recycling and compacted, main engines which comply with future international conventions, energy-saving silicon hull paints,etc...)

As are our 3 existing vessels, it will be ISM, ISO 9001:2000 et ISO 14001:2004

A concentration of “green” innovations for a “CLEAN SHIP”

“CLEAN SHIP” certified by the Bureau Véritas,
La  Méridionale has voluntarily chosen this  classification which imposes strict compliance with environmental regulations designed to control and reduce polluting waste in the sea and the air.

For the PIANA, La Méridionale has opted for exceptional specifications:

  • Optimised design of propellers and hull for speed
  • A silicon coating on the hull, free of toxic biocide products, to reduce friction
  • Electronic ignition engines capable of an optimum yield over a large operational range
  • A fuel analyser prototype for optimising combustion
  • Intelligent thermal and electrical management systems designed to reduce consumption
  • Exhaust gas recycling equipment ahead of future regulations
  • A ballast water processing mechanism to avoid the accidental dissemination of aquatic organisms
  • Very efficient effluent collection and processing tools
  • A selective waste sorting circuit
  • A system for sharing cetacean observations in order to protect this species.

Comfort criteria and a standard of service without equal on the market

The PIANA will offer all its customers, freight and passengers, very complete facilities:

  • 200 cabins, 150 of which have 4 beds and 50 which are equipped with a double bed
  • A modular restaurant area (total capacity of 400 seats with a restaurant and a self-service cafeteria)
  • Two bars, one of which opens directly on to a promenade bridge at the rear of the ship, as well as a private lounge
  • A cinema (100 seats)
  • A meeting room (50 seats)
  • A garage deck reserved exclusively for passenger’s cars.

La Méridionale ships are known for their personalised service, their pleasant environment and the excellence of their service.
The PIANA will be the first new ship to meet the new French requirements for on-board accessibility.

The “PIANA”: a symbolic name

The PIANA takes its name from one of the most beautiful sites in Corsica, classified by UNESCO as of world interest.
The village of Piana overlooks the Gulf of Porto, facing the peninsulas of Senino and Scandola. Listed among the most beautiful villages in France, it is very picturesque with its white houses and its situation dominated by the very beautiful Sainte-Marie church. Piana provides a backdrop to an exceptional site and offers the opportunity for numerous visits and excursions.
